DO YOU KNOW THAT:
- On June 14, 1922, a small group of Ontario engineers celebrated the passage of the provincial Act to Establish the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (APEO) as the organization representing the professional engineers in Ontario. However, this enactment of the legislature was only a registration law that gave no enforcement powers to the Association
- The Bill to Amend the Professional Engineers Act received royal assent on March 25, 1937, making APEO membership a requirement for practising engineering in Ontario
Since 1937, the Professional Engineers Act has been amended seven times. Amendments in 1946, 1949 and 1960 expanded the scope of professional engineering and established a well-defined Code of Ethics for the Association. Subsequent amendments in 1969, 1984 and 1990 were made to keep pace with rapid changes in the engineering profession and to enhance the Association’s regulatory role. In 2003 the act was amended again to include a new class of licence (the Provisional License), establishing the right to appeal PEO admission / licence decision and opening up the discipline hearing for public interest
